Nobody does February like we Canadians.

In a month so often blanketed by heavy snow, frigid temperatures, treacherous roads, ice storms, school closings, cancelled flights, freezing rain, and frozen pipes, life can certainly be difficult at times.  We all need diversions some days.

So what’s there to celebrate?  Well, St. Valentine’s Day for one!  We can grasp on to this ray of sunshine and wring it for all it’s worth.  Some celebrate with special foods and meals, some with gifts, and some with events.  Are you wanting to make your loved ones feel special this week?  We can help.

This weekend at our Calgary Farmers Market booth, we will be offering 15% off any of our five Dessert Wines.  In my humble opinion, Dessert Wines are the perfect Valentine’s gift.  Why?  Because of their versatility.

They can be enjoyed on their own after a special meal.  They can be mixed into a favourite cocktail.  They can be used to add marvelous flavour to a dessert.  Bring some tastes of summer into your February celebrations.  Here are five ways to enjoy a dessert wine with your loved one(s) this Valentine’s Day:

1)  Honour tradition with a Canadian Kir Royale.  Mix one part Black Currant Dessert Wine into two parts of Canadian Champagne for the traditional celebratory drink.  Cheers!

2)  Mix up a yummy martini.  Mix one part Wild Black Cherry Dessert Wine with one part vodka and one part cranberry juice.  Shake it up!

3)  Indulge your inner chocolate.  Purchase some chocolate one-ounce cups, and fill them with Raspberry Dessert Wine.  Ooh la la!

4)  Spritzer it up.  Mix one part Saskatoon Berry Dessert Wine with two parts soda and serve over ice.  Yummy!

5)  Take it straight.  Pour Strawberry Dessert Wine into a small wine glass and serve it up beside some creamy cheesecake drizzled with milk chocolate.  Oh my!

Of course if you want to make your accompanying dessert or appetizer from scratch, visit our website (www.fieldstonefruitwines.com) and click on the recipes tab.  You’ll find Strawberry-Cheese Pate, Saskatoon Brownies, or Black Currant Sorbet (among many others).  You can indulge your loved ones with their favourite summer flavours in many forms.  Who says we can’t have summer in February?

Just a reminder that you can find our dessert wines at many fine stores around the province.  Visit www.fieldstonefruitwines.com/find-us for an updated list at any time.

For those Calgarians who love events, over at Calgary Farmers Market, Valentine celebrations are beginning a little early. February 11th is the day not to be missed.  We’re transforming the market into a romantic Valentine’s destination. There will be red checkered table cloths, flowers, hearts galore, and lots of entertainment.  Share a romantic brunch or lunch with that special someone while Rowdy Pianos spread the love as they donate all tips to the Calgary Food Bank, and fill the market with love songs. Enjoy roaming musical entertainment including the very popular A Capella groups Yay Quartet and Fresh Blend. Make fruit flower Valentines or capture your love in our romantic photo booth.

We have two other great events coming up in February for all those who are ready to ignore the weather and get out there.

On February 24 and 25th, you’ll find us at Calgary’s premier wine event – WINEFEST!  Join us at Stampede Park BMO Centre, Hall E, for two great days of wine tasting.  Winefest invites you to indulge among hundreds of wines in all styles and flavours. One ticket includes a sampling of wines and hors d’oeuvres and a keepsake wine glass.  Sample from red, white, port, sparkling, fruit and dessert wines from the world’s most celebrated wine regions while wine experts share their knowledge and tasting tips. Pair these sips with a sweet and savoury selection of hors d’oeuvres and nibbles.  An event not to be missed.  More information at www.celebratewinefest.com.  And don’t forget to vote in the People’s Choice Awards!

February 25th will also find us at ALBERTA FOOD AND BEVERAGE EXPO – MEDICINE HAT.  Sample hundreds of wines, beers, delicious cocktails and the best food from Medicine Hat’s best restaurants and local suppliers.  This year’s event will host over 120 vendors spread out over the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede Park.  A truly remarkable value at $20 entry fee. You can find more information at www.eatdrinkalberta.com.   Hope to see you there!

Finally, if you’ve picked up that Strawberry Dessert Wine for Valentine’s celebrations, and you have managed to save ½ cup of it, here is a wonderful way to use up the bottle. I get asked for this recipe more than any other, so I’m including it once again. It looks beautiful, it tastes wonderful, and it’s the perfect Valentine’s Dessert.

Field Stone Strawberry Cream Trifle

1 baked white cake, 2 layer size
2 cups (or desired amount) sliced fresh strawberries
1 Vanilla pudding and pie filling, 6 serving size
3 cups milk
1/2 cup Field Stone Strawberry Dessert Wine
1 cup whipping cream
1/2 tsp vanilla

Cut cake into chunks.
Cook pudding with milk according to package directions. Cool to room temperature. Hasten cooling by placing pan in cold water, stirring often.

Whip cream and vanilla until stiff. Make layers of cake chunks, a generous sprinkle of Strawberry Dessert Wine, sliced strawberries and pudding in glass trifle bowl, using as many layers as needed according to size of bowl. Make the last layer pudding. Spread whipped cream over top. Chill. Garnish with fresh strawberries.  Enjoy!

And that’s it for this month!  Happy Dessert Wine Day, everyone … oops, I mean Valentines…
