Summertime, and the livin’ is easy.  So goes the most famous line of George Gershwin’s opera, Porgy and Bess.  Personally, I think Gershwin was on to something.

Summertime livin’ can be easy, at least in the dining department.  What is more enjoyable than simple summer meals, served on the patio?  In my opinion, a simple burger, grilled to perfection, topped with some fresh salsa, and accompanied by a chilled glass of Bumbleberry Fruit Wine can’t be beat on a warm summer day.  But don’t stop there.  As we say around here, “With fruit wines, the possibilities are endless!”

Fruit wines are a wonderful main ingredient for so many of summer’s favourite patio drinks.  Do you love sangrias, wine spritzers, slushies, lemonades, Italian sodas, fruity martinis or even adult popsicles?   You can whip up excellent versions of these treats using the luscious flavours of fruit wines to give them new life!

With that in mind, here are four of our newest fabulous favourites …

Number 1:  Raspberry-Lemon Sangria Spritzer
1 bottle Raspberry Fruit Wine
1/4 cup Limoncello (lemon liqueur)
1 lemon, sliced
1/2 pint raspberries
1 cup sparkling water
Combine the wine, Limoncello, lemons, and raspberries in a pitcher and refrigerate til cold.  When ready to serve, top with sparkling water and stir.  It’s that easy!

Number 2:  Fresh Strawberry-Rhubarb Sangria
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
2 rhubarb stalks, chopped
1/2 cup orange juice
1 pint strawberries, quartered
4 cups chilled seltzer
1 bottle Strawberry-Rhubarb Fruit Wine
In small pan, combine sugar and water, bring to a boil and add rhubarb.  Set aside and let cool.  Combine all other ingredients, then add rhubarb mixture.  Serve over ice.  It’s so yummy!

Number 3:  Raspberry Wine Slushie
2 cups raspberries
1 bottle Raspberry Fruit Wine
1 Tbsp. lemon juice
2 Tbsp. sugar
Puree the raspberries, wine, juice and sugar.  Pour into an ice cream maker and process according to manufacturer’s directions.  Scoop out of the freezer bowl and place in container to store until ready to drink.  Allow to thaw to slushy consistency before serving.   O my!

Number 4:  Fruity Field Stone Lemonade
3 parts lemonade
1 part Field Stone Dessert Wine
You choose the flavour!  Mix together in a tall glass over ice, adding mixed berries and lemon slices.
For a pitcher, use 3 cups lemonade and 1 cup dessert wine.  Your summer lemonade will reach new heights!

And lastly, we can’t talk about summer without including  ice cream!  Using Field Stone dessert wines to make scrumptious ice cream desserts has always taken the fuss out of the final course.  If you’ve made our Summer Swirl Dessert with the Raspberry Dessert Wine, you know how delectable it can be.  But here’s another variant:  Saskatoon Swirl… you might want to give it a whirl!

Saskatoon Summer Swirl
125 ml Saskatoon Berry Dessert Wine
1 litre Co-op’s Saskatoon Berry Ice Cream
Soften the ice cream and put into the blender with the dessert wine.  Blend well and pour into martini glasses. Re-freeze.  Serve with fresh saskatoons, or a mixture of blueberries and blackberries on top.  Add a shaving of chocolate.  With thanks to Co-op!
