As our forefathers used to say, “A calm June puts the farmer in tune”.  Well, things have certainly changed.  Here at our farm, June is anything but calm.  In fact, it’s closer to frenzied.  But the frenzied rush has certainly left these farmers in great shape – for our new raspberry canes and saskatoon seedlings are all planted, our strawberries are uncovered, and our general fieldwork is well underway.  Now we’ll calmly move into market season!

Yes, June means all the outdoor seasonal markets are up and running.  We are always excited about re-connecting with our many market customers around the province.  If you haven’t visited a market yet, come by this week, taste all our new releases, and say hey.  Almost every day of the week, we can be found offering free tastings of our summer wines in some part of the province, maybe even in your neighbourhood.   And we are very happy to add several brand new markets this year!

Here is our complete weekly run-down.  You’ll find all the details in the links:

Whew!

If you love Alberta products – growers, farmers, makers, bakers, artists – we hope you’ll visit.  Lots of great new things to be discovered this summer, so come on out and #supportlocal.

And now that it’s officially summer, the Winery is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 to 5 until the end of August.  If you love a drive in the country with some free tasting at the end of it, head east on Highway #1 to Strathmore.  Our picnic tables are always available for your picnic lunch, and you may just want to purchase a bottle to have alongside.  Free re-corking is always included.

Now to the other great event in June – Father’s Day!

Do you have a picnic planned with Dad next Sunday?  Dinner?  Patio-Time? Regardless of how you celebrate Father’s Day, we’ve got you covered for the perfect gift. Come visit us at any of the markets or your local liquor store to pick up a delectable summer accompaniment to Father’s Day celebrations.  From off-dry to sweet, we have something Dad will love.

And on Father’s Day weekend you can purchase a Wild Black Cherry Dessert Wine for 15% off at Calgary Farmers’ Market or at the winery, and on Sunday the 18th at Bearspaw Market and Edmonton South Common.  Fortified, port-style, it’s the perfect after-dinner drink for the world’s greatest father.  And he may even share it with you …

Looking a little farther ahead, July 1st is just around the corner, and with it the many celebrations of Canada150 that are now in the news.  Here in Alberta, we have a plethora of wonderful local food products, grown or crafted in our own province. With that in mind, from now until July 1st, we are asking everyone to post a picture of your Field Stone Wine – the bottle and a poured glass – and post it to Twitter, using the hashtag #EatAlberta150.  Tag us @FieldStoneFruit, and on July 1st we will do a random draw of all the entries for a free wine gift pack.  Let’s get in the spirit of celebrating our local products in light of Canada’s milestone birthday!

And finally, I can’t close without including a Field Stone recipe.  I’m going to leave you with a martini idea for you and Dad:  the Wild Cherry Crantini:

1 part vodka

1 part white cranberry juice

1 part Wild Black Cherry Dessert Wine

Mix together in a shaker with crushed ice and shake well.  Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a fresh cherry.

It’s so yummy, and so easy.

Happy June, everyone!  Let the Summer Sipping begin.
